  • Regional parties are political parties that are based in a particular state or region , and represent the interests and aspirations of that area. Regional parties have played an important role and impact on the federal structure and politics of India.
  • They have challenged the dominance of national parties, especially the Congress, and have increased the political competition and representation in the country.

  • They have formed coalition governments at the centre, either by joining or supporting the national parties, and have influenced the policy-making and governance at the national level.

  • They have asserted their regional identity and autonomy , and have demanded more devolution of powers and resources from the centre to the states.

  • They have highlighted the regional issues and problems , such as language, culture, development, water-sharing, etc., and have mobilised the people on these bases.

  • They have also contributed to the social justice and empowerment of the marginalised sections of society, such as the lower castes, minorities, women, etc.
  • Some of the examples of regional parties are:
    • Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra
    • All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ( AIADMK ) in Tamil Nadu
    • Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi
    • Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh
