Detailed Answer by Teachoo

  • The trend of the primary sector's share in employment from 1977-78 to 2017-18 is declining. In 1977-78, the primary sector accounted for 71% of employment, but by 2017-18, its share had decreased to 44%. This indicates a significant shift away from employment in the primary sector over the years.

  • The agricultural output has not increased as fast as the demand for food and other products. This is due to factors such as erratic rainfall, soil degradation, lack of irrigation, etc.

  • The productivity and technology in the primary sector have not improved much compared to the other sectors. This means that the primary sector workers produce less output per unit of input than the secondary or tertiary sector workers.

  • Government policies have favored the development of the secondary and tertiary sectors over the primary sector. This is because the secondary and tertiary sectors have higher growth potential, higher value addition, and higher tax revenue than the primary sector.

Question (ii)

part 2 - Question 26 - Teachoo Sample Paper - Social Science Class 10 - Paper 1 - Solutions to CBSE Sample Paper - Social Science Class 10 - Social Science Class 10

How much has the tertiary sector’s share in employment increased from 1977-78 to 2017-18? Give two reasons for this increase.

Answer by student

  • The tertiary sector's share in employment has increased by 13 percentage from 1977-78 to 2017-18.
  • The demand for services such as banking, education, health, transport, communication, etc. has increased due to the growth of population, income, and urbanization.
  • The tertiary sector has benefited from the development of the secondary sector , which requires services such as trade, finance, transport, etc.

Detailed Answer by Teachoo

  • The tertiary sector's share in employment has increased by 13 percentage points from 1977-78 to 2017-18. In 1977-78, it accounted for 18% of employment, while in 2017-18, its share had risen to 31%.

  • There are several reasons for this increase, such as:
    • The demand for services has increased due to the growth of population, income, and urbanization. As people become more affluent and educated, they demand more and better services such as health care, education, entertainment, etc.
    • The tertiary sector has benefited from the development of the secondary sector , which requires services such as trade, finance, transport, etc. As the secondary sector grows and produces more goods, it needs more support from the tertiary sector to distribute and sell them.
