Tools improved in three steps:
A microblade is a very small stone blade.
Step 1 - Large cutting tools
- Handaxes, cleavers, choppers and scrapers made of quartzite and limestone.
- Heavy tools, used to chop meat and break bones.
Step 2 - Smaller stone tools
- The main types were scrapers, borers, and points .
- These show improved efficiency in hunting , by developing projectiles tipped with sharp points .
- A projectile is a weapon that is thrown or shot, like a spear.
Step 3 - Blades, microblades and the bow and arrow
- Humans invented the bow and arrow .
- They made parallel-sided blade and microblade tools .
- These were made from rocks with a glassy texture , which are very sharp when freshly made .
- A tiny blade is too small to hold. So microblades were fixed into a handle .
- With these, they could now hunt small game animals .
