Question 12 A rational number in its lowest form has denominator 23 × 5. How many decimal places will its decimal expansion have? Explain your answer To find the exact decimal value of a fraction without long division, we try to turn the denominator into a perfect power of 10 Now, our denominator is 23 × 5 To make power of 10, we multiply by 52 So that 23 × 5 × 52 = 23 × 53 = (2 × 5)3 Thus, 23 × 5 × 52 = 23 × 51 + 2 = 23 × 53 = (2 × 5)3 = 1,000 Since we have 3 zeros in denominator Our denominator terminates after 3 decimal places
