Question 35 (a) Manish is standing on level ground and observes a kite flying 200 m away from him at an angle of elevation of 30°. Mahesh, standing on the roof of a 50 m high building on the opposite side of the kite, observes the same kite at an angle of elevation of 45°. Find the distance between the kite and Mahesh. Let’s draw a diagram 30° E A 200 m B D 50 m 45° C R ? Seppe Let Manish is standing at point ‘A’ and Mahesh is standing at point ‘D’. Given that Distance of kite from Manish = AB = 200 m Height of building = CD = 50 m Also, ∠ BAE = 30° & ∠ BDR = 45° We need to find Distance between the kite and Mahesh i.e. BD Now, in right triangle ∆ ABE sin A = (𝑆𝑖𝑑𝑒 𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 𝐴)/(𝐻𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒) sin 30° = (𝑩𝑬)/(𝑨𝑩) (1)/(2)=(𝐵𝐸)/(200) (200)/(2)=BE 100 = BE BE = 100 m Now, BE = BR + RE BE = BR + CD 100 = BR + 50 30° E A 200 m B D 50 m 45° C R ? 100 – 50 = BR 50 = BR BR = 50 m Now, in in right triangle ∆ BRD sin D = (𝑆𝑖𝑑𝑒 𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 𝐷)/(𝐻𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒) sin 45° = (𝑩𝑹)/(𝑩𝑫) (1)/(sqrt(2))=(50)/(𝐵𝐷) BD = 50sqrt(𝟐) m ∴ Distance of kite from Mahesh is BD = 50sqrt(𝟐) m 30° E A 200 m B D 50 m 45° C R ?
