Question 4 If (1 − p) is a root of the quadratic equation x² + px + 1 − p = 0, then its roots are: (A) 0, 1 (B) −1, 1 (C) 0, −1 (D) −1, 2 Since (1 − p) is a root of the quadratic equation x² + px + 1 − p = 0 It will satisfy the equation Putting x = (1 − p) in the equation (1 – p)² + p(1 – p) + 1 − p = 0 1^(2) + p^(2) – 2p + p – p^(2) + 1 – p = 0 2 – 2p = 0 2 = 2p 2p = 2 p = (2)/(2) p = 1 Putting p = 1 in the quadratic equation x² + px + 1 − p = 0 x² + 1x + 1 − 1 = 0 x² + x = 0 x(x + 1) = 0 ∴ x = 0, x = – 1 ∴ The roots of the equation are 0, –1 So, correct answer is (B)
