Two carbon compounds X and Y have the molecular formula C 4 H 8 and C 5 H 12 respectively. Which one of these is most likely to show addition reaction? Justify your answer. Also, give the chemical equation to explain the process of addition reaction in this case.

Answer

Addition reactions are those in which elements are added over double or triple bonds . Only unsaturated compounds undergo addition reactions.

Now,

  • Since C 4 H 8 has a general formula of C n H 2n , it is an alkene i.e. unsaturated hydrocarbon. It can undergo addition reaction.
  • Since C 5 H 12 has a general formula of C n H 2n+2 , it is an alkane i.e. saturated hydrocarbon. It cannot undergo addition reactions.

The addition reaction of C 4 H 8 is
