Meaning of Harvesting

Cutting and Gathering of crop after it is mature(it has grown) is called Harvesting

It takes around 3-4 months for crops to grow

What is threshing?

Separation of grain from its outer covering (chaff) is called  threshing.

It is done by the help of machine called ‘Combine'

 

What is a combine?

This machine is combination of harvester and thresher

It is a machine which cuts the standing crop and threshes it(separates grain from chaff) in one operation

 

What is Winnowing?

Small farmers separate grain from chaff with the help of wind. This method is called Winnowing

It is done with the help of wind

Grain is made to fall from great height.

Grain is heavy and fails direct to earth.Chaff is light and is blown away to a distance because of wind

 

 

 

What are Different Harvesting Festival celebrated in India?

Festivals Celebrated at time of harvesting of crops are called Harvesting Festivals

Examples

Pongal, Baisakhi, Holi,Bihu are celebrated in different parts of India

Why are these festivals celebrated?

When crop harvests, farmer becomes happy (as he will get money from sale of crops),so these festivals are celebrated
