What will we study in this chapter?

As the name suggests, we will study two closely connected things:

• State - how political organisation and systems of governance developed.
• Society - how people organised social life, occupations, learning, religious practices and economic activity.

The chapter follows these developments in the Indian subcontinent up to the end of the first millennium CE , that is, up to about 1000 CE .
