Answer as written by the student:

On the Face of It is a play by Susan Hill that explores the theme of loneliness and friendship through the characters of Derry and Mr. Lamb.

Derry is a young boy who has a burnt face and feels rejected by society. Mr. Lamb is an old man who has a tin leg and lives alone in his garden. They meet by chance when Derry enters Mr. Lamb’s garden without permission. Mr. Lamb welcomes Derry and tries to make him feel comfortable and confident.

He tells him stories and advises him to ignore what others think or say about him. He also encourages him to enjoy life and nature.

Derry gradually opens up to Mr. Lamb and finds a friend in him. He decides to come back to visit him after taking permission from his mother.
