Water clocks measure time using the flow of water.

  • Water flowing-out type
Water flows out from a vessel with markings.
The falling water level shows how much time has passed.
  • Floating bowl type (Ghatika-yantra)
A bowl with a small hole is placed on water.
It slowly fills up and sinks in a fixed time.
It is then lifted and floated again.
