  • The Dakshin Ganga or the South Ganga is a popular name for the Godavari river , which is the second longest river in India after the Ganga. It originates from the Brahmagiri hills in Maharashtra and flows for about 1465 km before joining the Bay of Bengal. It is also known as the Vriddh Ganga or the Old Ganga, as it is considered to be older than the Ganga in terms of geological history.
  • Two characteristics of this river that distinguish it from other rivers are:
    • It has the largest drainage basin in peninsular India, covering about 10% of the country’s area. It drains parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. It has several tributaries, such as Pranhita, Indravati, Manjira, Wainganga, etc.
