Class 9
Chapter 7 Class 9 - Diversity In Living Organisms

The method of arranging organisms into groups or sets on the basis of similarities and differences is called classification. Classification helps us in exploring the diversity of life forms.

Basis for grouping organism into five kingdom is as follows:

  1. Prokaryotic versus Eukaryotic structure of cells.
  2. Unicellular versus Multicellular organisation.
  3. The three different modes of nutrition:
    • Photosynthesis(Plants)
    • Absorption from the environment(fungi)
    • Ingestion(Animals)

One group of ‘organisms’ that does not fit into any classification is ‘ Viruses’. Viruses are extremely small particles. They donot have a cellular structure and can reproduce by invading living cells.
