How can ethanol and ethanoic acid be differentiated on the basis of their physical and chemical properties?

Physical Properties:

Ethanol

Ethanoic Acid

  1. It has a lower boiling and melting point as compared to ethanoic acid.
  1. It has a higher melting and boiling point.

 

Chemical Properties:

Ethanol

Ethanoic Acid

  1. Ethanol decolourises alkaline KMnO 4.
  2. Ethanol shows no reaction with sodium bicarbonate.
  3. It is neutral therefore doesn’t change the color of litmus paper
  1. Ethanoic acid does not decolourises alkaline KMnO 4
  2. It releases CO 2 on reaction with  sodium bicarbonate which turns limewater milky
  3. It is acidic in nature and therefore turns blue litmus red.
