Explain the formation of scum when hard water is treated with soap.

Answer:

  • The hardness of water is due to the calcium and magnesium salts present in it.
  • When the soap molecule reacts with these salts, it leads to the formation of a white precipitate which is insoluble in water and is known as scum.
