What is an homologous series? Explain with an example.

Answer:

Homologous series is a series of organic compounds having similar structures and similar chemica l properties. There is a difference of CH 2 group between 2 successive compounds.

For example

If we compare methane and ethane , the latter has 1 carbon atom and 2 hydrogen atoms more as compared to the former.

Therefore we can say that there is a difference of CH 2 group between the two and so, they belong to the same homologous series.
