Parts of Circle Let’s look at various parts of the circle We look at the definition in detail Radius = OA OX is also radius Tangent = Line BC Secant = Line DE Chord = Line Segment DE Diameter = Line Segment DF Circle: It is the as set of all points on a plane that are at an equal distance (equidistant) from one specific point. Locus: This is a fancy mathematical word for a "set of points that satisfy a specific rule or condition." So, a circle is simply the locus of points that are all exactly the same distance from the center. Centre: The fixed point right in the middle. In figure, O is the centre. Radius: The distance from the centre to any point on the outer edge of the circle. Plural for radius is radii. In figure, the line segment OA is a radius. (Note: OD, OF, and OX would also be radii, and they are all the exact same length!). Chord: A straight line segment that connects any two points on the circle. In figure, the line segment BC is a chord. Diameter: This is a special type of chord. It is a chord that passes directly through the centre of the circle. It is the longest possible chord you can draw in a circle, and its length is exactly twice the length of the radius. In figure, DF is the diameter Arc, Sector, Segment Minor Arc = (𝐷𝐸) ̂ Major Arc = (𝐷𝐴𝐸) ̂ Common Sectors Quadrant Semicircle Quadrant is 1/4th the circle Semicircle is half the circle
