Test for Starch (Carbohydrates)

The main forms of Carbohydrates present in our food are-

  • Sugar
  • Starch

To test for the presence of starch.

  • Take a small quantity of Food items or Raw Ingredients like rice or potato .
  • Put 2 to 3 drops of dilute iodine solution on it.
  • Observe any changes on the food items.
  • If the item changes its color to black or blue.
  • Black and blue color indicates that it contains starch .
