Example 10 Find the factors of 𝑦^2 – 7y + 12. 𝑦^2 – 7y + 12 By middle term splitting = 𝑦^2 βˆ’ 3𝑦 βˆ’ 4𝑦+12 = (𝑦^2 βˆ’ 3𝑦) βˆ’(4π‘¦βˆ’12) Both have y as common factor Both have 4 as common factor = y (y βˆ’ 3) βˆ’ 4 (y βˆ’ 3) Taking (y βˆ’ 3) common = (y βˆ’ 3) (y βˆ’ 4) Splitting the middle term We need to find two numbers whose Sum = βˆ’7 Product = 12 So, we write βˆ’7y = βˆ’3y βˆ’ 4y
