Chapter 6 Class 10 - Life Processes

List the similarities and differences between aerobic and anaerobic mode of respiration

Answer:

Similarities:

  • Both aerobic and anaerobic modes of respiration involve breaking down of glucose in order to produce energy .
  • Both the processes lead to the release of ATP (energy currency of the cell). However, the amount of ATP produced from aerobic respiration is more.
  • The oxidation of food takes place in both the processes.

Aerobic Respiration

Anaerobic Respiration

1. Aerobic respiration occurs in the presence of oxygen

1. Anaerobic respiration occurs in the absence of oxygen

2. Complete oxidation of glucose takes place to form CO 2 and H 2 O

2. Incomplete oxidation of glucose takes place to form alcohol / lactic acid and  CO 2

3. It occurs in plant and animal cells

3. It occurs in anaerobic bacteria and             human muscle cells

4. For each molecule of glucose, 38 molecules of ATP are generated

4. For each molecule of glucose, only 2 molecules of ATP are generated
