Life Processes explains the essential activities that keep an organism alive. Nutrition supplies raw materials, respiration releases usable energy, transportation carries substances to and from cells, and excretion removes harmful metabolic waste. These four processes are connected and operate continuously in plants and animals.

What are life processes?
Life processes are maintenance activities required for the survival of an individual organism. They include nutrition, respiration, transportation and excretion. Reproduction is important for continuation of a species but is not essential for the immediate survival of an individual.
Nutrition in plants and human beings
Students begin by comparing autotrophic and heterotrophic nutrition.
Green plants prepare food by photosynthesis. They use carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll to form carbohydrates. Stomata allow gaseous exchange, while roots absorb water and minerals.
Human beings follow holozoic nutrition. The chapter traces food through the alimentary canal and explains:
