Answer:

  • Hydrogenation is a type of addition reaction wherein hydrogen atoms are added across double/triple bonds of an unsaturated hydrocarbon in the presence of a catalyst (a chemical substance used to speed up the reaction ).

Note: In this reaction Pd/C acts as a catalyst i.e. a substance to speed up the reaction.

  • Industrially, hydrogenation is used to convert vegetable oil to vegetable ghee .
