Question 1 - Think & Reflect (Page 118) In my school, the playground is too small to have a 400 m track, so the school constructed a 200 m track instead. Does this mean that we need a smaller stagger for the race tracks in my school (i.e., smaller than the stagger used in the Olympics), for the same 4 × 100 m relay race? Total Distance 1 lap = 200m. 2 laps = 400m On a 400m track, they run the curves once. On a 200m track, they navigate the curves twice. Each curve adds extra distance for the outer lanes. Because they do 2 laps, this extra distance is doubled Extra Distance Extra distance = 2 laps × [2 × π × (Radius Diff)] The Counter-Intuitive Answer No, you don't need a smaller stagger. Because they run twice as many curves to complete 400m, you need a LARGER stagger to compensate. Assuming lane widths are the same, the stagger must be exactly double the Olympic stagger.
