Ex 3.3, 3 (i) Find the difference: (i) 5/6 −1/4 5/6 −1/4 = (𝟓 × 𝟒 − 𝟏 × 𝟔)/(𝟔 × 𝟒) = (20 − 6)/24 = 𝟏𝟒/𝟏𝟐 Simplifying = 14/24 = 𝟕/𝟏𝟐 Note: We could directly take LCM of 6 and 4 = 12 And, write 𝟓/𝟔=𝟓/𝟔 ×𝟐/𝟐=𝟏𝟎/𝟏𝟐 𝟏/𝟒=𝟏/𝟒 ×𝟑/𝟑=𝟑/𝟏𝟐 And, then solve Ex 3.3, 3 (ii) Find the difference: (ii) 11/8 −3/4 11/8 " "−3/4 Since LCM of 4 & 8 is 8 = 𝟏𝟏/𝟖−𝟑/𝟒×𝟐/𝟐 = 11/8−6/8 = (11 − 6)/8 = 5/8 Ex 3.3, 3 (iii) Find the difference: (iii) −7/9 −(−2/3) −7/9 " "−(−2/3) = −7/9+2/3 Since LCM of 3 & 9 is 9 = −𝟕/𝟗+𝟐/𝟑 ×𝟑/𝟑 = −7/9+6/9 = (−7 + 6)/9 = (−(7 − 6))/9 = (−𝟏)/𝟗
