Ex 3.3, 2 (i) Find the sum: (i) 2/5 +3/10 2/5 +3/10 = (𝟐 × 𝟏𝟎 + 𝟑 × 𝟓)/(𝟓 × 𝟏𝟎) = (20 + 15)/50 = 𝟑𝟓/𝟓𝟎 Simplifying = 35/50 = 𝟕/𝟏𝟎 Note: We could directly take LCM of 5 and 10 = 10 And, write 𝟐/𝟓=𝟐/𝟓 ×𝟐/𝟐=𝟒/𝟏𝟎 And, then solve Ex 3.3, 2 (ii) Find the sum: (ii) 7/12 +5/8 7/12 +5/8 = (𝟕 × 𝟖 + 𝟏𝟐 × 𝟓)/(𝟏𝟐 × 𝟖) = (56 + 60)/(12 × 8) = 𝟏𝟏𝟔/𝟗𝟔 Simplifying = 116/96 = 𝟐𝟗/𝟐𝟒 Note: We could directly take LCM of 12 and 8 = 24 And, write 𝟕/𝟏𝟐=𝟕/𝟏𝟐 ×𝟐/𝟐=𝟏𝟒/𝟐𝟒 𝟓/𝟖=𝟓/𝟖 ×𝟑/𝟑=𝟏𝟓/𝟐𝟒 And, then solve Ex 3.3, 2 (iii) Find the sum: (iii) −4/7 +3/14 −4/7 +3/14 Since LCM of 7 & 14 is 14 = −𝟒/𝟕 ×𝟐/𝟐 +𝟑/𝟏𝟒 = −8/14 +3/14 = (−𝟖 + 𝟑)/𝟏𝟒 = (−(8 − 3) )/14 = (−𝟓)/𝟏𝟒
