Example 1 (Page 6) Madhu and Madhav each ate biscuits of a different variety. Madhu’s biscuits had 25% sugar, while Madhav’s had 35% sugar. Can you tell who ate more sugar? Suppose Madhu ate 120 g of biscuits and Madhav ate 95 g of biscuits. Who consumed more sugar? Here we cannot compare percentages, we have to compare absolute values of sugar consumed Let’s do it Madhu Madhu ate 120g of biscuits, which had 25% sugar Thus, Amount of sugar in biscuits = Amount of biscuits × Percentage of sugar in biscuits = 120 × 25% = 120 × 25/100 = 120 × 1/4 = 30 g Madhav Madhav ate 95g of biscuits, which had 35% sugar Thus, Amount of sugar in biscuits = Amount of biscuits × Percentage of sugar in biscuits = 95 × 35% = 95 × 35/100 = 95 × 7/20 = 𝟗𝟓/𝟐𝟎 × 7 = 19/4 × 7 = 133/4 = 33.25 g Thus, Even though Madhu ate more biscuits (120g vs 95g), Madhav ate more sugar (33.25g vs 30g) because the concentration of sugar in his biscuits was much higher
