Percentage Increase or Decrease Percentage increase or decrease is used to compare new value from the old valuePERCENTAGE INCREASE (+%) " FORMULA: " (" New Value - Old Value " /" Old Value " )×100 EXAMPLE: Salary ₹50k to ₹60k. " Increase "=((₹57.5k-₹50k)/₹50k)×100=15% PERCENTAGE DECREASE (-%) FORMULA: (" Old Value - New Value " /" Old Value " )×100 EXAMPLE: Price ₹80 to ₹72. " Decrease "=((₹80-₹72)/₹80)×100=10% We use the formula Percentage Change = 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆/𝑶𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 × 𝟏𝟎𝟎 Let’s do some examples Suppose the price of 1 kg tomatoes 3 years ago was ₹30, and the price now is ₹42. Find how much price has changed in percentage? Original price = ₹ 30 Price now = ₹ 42 Thus, Change in value = 42 − 30 = 12 Since value has increased, it is Percentage increase Thus, Percentage increase = (𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒)/(𝑂𝑟𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑎𝑚𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡) × 100% = 𝟏𝟐/𝟑𝟎 × 100% = 2/5 × 100% = 2 × 20 = 40% We say the price of tomatoes increased by 40% over the last 3 years. Next question is The average footfall in this theater before COVID was 160. Now it is just 100. What is the percentage change? Original footfall = 160 Footfall now = 100 Thus, Change in value = 160 − 100 = 60The average footfall in this theater before COVID was 160. Now it is just 100. What is the percentage change? Original footfall = 160 Footfall now = 100 Thus, Change in value = 160 − 100 = 60 Since value has decreased, it is Percentage decrease Thus, Percentage decreased = (𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒)/(𝑂𝑟𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑎𝑚𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡) × 100% = 𝟔𝟎/𝟏𝟔𝟎 × 100% = 6/16 × 100% = 3/8 × 100% = 3/2 × 25% = 75/2 = 37.5 % We say the footfall in this theater post-COVID has decreased by 37.5%.
