Percentages Around Us Percentages are widely used in a variety of contexts. Some examples – book and Teachoo special areThe human body, on average, is about 60% water by weight. Ice cream is about 30-50% air by volume. of the worlds population watched at least part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Over 80% of the teenagers globally fail to meet the recommendation of at least one hour of daily physical actvity. About 99.86% of the Solar System's mass is contained in the Sun. An estimated 52% of the agricultural land worldwide is degraded.About 71% of the Earth's surface is covered by water. Around 90% of the world's data was created in the last two years. A typical milk chocolate bar is about 30% cocoa solids. Approximately 20% of the Amazon rainforest has been lost in the last 50 years. The Moon's gravity is about 16.6% (or 1/6th) of Earth's. About 50% of daily energy expenditure is for basic bodily functions (BMR).Explaining examples in detail 1. The Human Body is ∼𝟔𝟎% Water What it means: If you weigh 50 kg , about 30 kg of that is just water! Math Check: 60/100 means more than half of you is liquid. This explains why drinking water is so important-you need to refill the tank! 2. Ice Cream is 30-50% Air What it means: You aren't just paying for cream and sugar; you are paying for fluff. Math Check: If ice cream had 0% air, it would be a rock-hard frozen block (like an ice cube) that you couldn't scoop. The percentage of air (called "overrun") is what makes it soft. 3. 45% of the World Watched the FIFA World Cup What it means: Almost half of every human being on Earth tuned in. Math Check: With 8 billion people on Earth, 45% is roughly 3.6 billion people. This shows the massive scale of the event using a simple number. 4. 80% of Teenagers are Inactive What it means: 4 out of every 5 teenagers don't get 1 hour of exercise a day. Math Check: 80/100=4/5. If you look at a group of 5 friends, statistically only 1 is getting enough exercise. Doctors use this percentage to warn us about health risks. 5. The Sun is 𝟗𝟗.𝟖𝟔% of the Solar System's Mass What it means: The Sun is basically everything. Math Check: All the planets (Jupiter, Earth, Mars, etc.), moons, and asteroids put together make up only the tiny remaining 0.14%. This percentage helps us realize how gigantic the Sun truly is. 6. 52% of Agricultural Land is Degraded What it means: More than half of the farmable land on Earth is damaged or losing quality. Math Check: Since 52%>50%, we know the majority of our soil is in trouble. This is a "warning percentage" used by environmentalists. 7. Earth's Surface is ~71% Water The Fact: While we live on land, the "Blue Planet" is mostly ocean. Why use % ?: It clearly shows the dominance of oceans over continents. If you threw a dart at a map of Earth, there is a 71% chance it would land in water. 8. 90% of World Data was Created in the Last 2 Years The Fact: We are creating information (videos, chats, posts) faster than ever in history. Why use %?: This proves the "Information Explosion." Even though humans have been writing for thousands of years, the internet age has generated almost all our data recently. 9. Milk Chocolate is about 30% Cocoa Solids The Fact: The rest is sugar, milk powder, and fats. Dark chocolate might be 70% or 85%. Why use %?: This helps you taste! A higher percentage tells you exactly how bitter or sweet the chocolate will be before you even open the wrapper. 10. The Amazon Rainforest has Lost - 20% of its Trees The Fact: In the last 50 years, one-ffth of this massive forest has been cut down. Why use % ?: 20/100=1/5. If you imagine the forest as a hand with 5 fingers, we have cut off one finger. Percentages make the damage easy to visualize. 11. The Moon's Gravity is ∼𝟏𝟔.𝟔% of Earth's The Fact: You would weigh much less on the Moon. Why use % ?: 16.6% is roughly 1/6. This tells you that if you can jump 1 meter high on Earth, you could jump 6 meters high on the Moon! 12. 50% of Your Daily Energy is Just for "Existing" The Fact: Even if you sleep all day, your body burns calories just to keep your heart beating and brain working (Basal Metabolic Rate). Why use % ?: It corrects the misconception that you only burn energy when you run. Half your "fuel" is used just to keep the machine running.
