Question 7 Amritpal decides on a destination for his vacation. If he takes a train, it will take him 5 1/6 hours to get there. If he takes a plane, it will take him 1/2 hour. How many hours does the plane save? First, let’s convert our mixed fraction into normal fraction 𝟓 𝟏/𝟔 =5+1/6 =(5 × 6 + 1)/6 =(30 + 1)/6 =𝟑𝟏/𝟔 Now, Hours taking plane will save = Hours taken by train – Hours taken by plane = 𝟑𝟏/𝟔−𝟏/𝟐 Common denominator of 6 and 2 will be 6 = 31/6−1/2 ×3/3 = 31/6−(1 × 3)/(2 × 3) = 31/6−3/6 = (31 − 3)/6 = 28/6 Simplifying fraction, dividing by 2 in both numerator & denominator = 𝟏𝟒/𝟑 hours Thus, the plane saves 𝟏𝟒/𝟑 hours
