Fractional Relations What fraction of area of the whole square does the shaded region occupy? Okay, so this can be done using estimation We divide The blue square box is 1/4 of the big box ∴ Area of blue square = 𝟏/𝟒 × Area of big square And, yellow square is half of blue square Area of yellow square = 1/2 × Area of big square = 1/2 × 1/4 × Area of big square = 𝟏/𝟖 × Area of big square Now, if we divide yellow triangle into 4 parts We notice that the shaded region is occupies 𝟑/𝟒 of yellow triangle Thus, Area of yellow square = 3/4 × Area of yellow square = 3/4 × 1/8 × Area of big square = (3 × 1)/(4 × 8) × Area of big square = 𝟑/𝟑𝟐 × Area of big square Thus, the shaded region occupies 3/32 of the area of the whole square.
