Question 4 Pāṭīgaṇita, a book written by Sridharacharya in the 9th century CE, mentions this problem: “Friend, after thinking, what sum will be obtained by adding together 1 ÷ 1/6 , 1 ÷ 1/10 , 1 ÷ 1/13 , 1 ÷ 1/9 , and 1 ÷ 1/2”. What should the friend say? We need to add 1 ÷ 1/6 , 1 ÷ 1/10 , 1 ÷ 1/13 , 1 ÷ 1/9 , and 1 ÷ 1/2 Let’s find the numbers individually 1 ÷ 𝟏/𝟔 = 1 × 6/1 = 6 1 ÷ 𝟏/𝟏𝟎 = 1 × 10/1 = 10 1 ÷ 𝟏/𝟏𝟑 = 1 × 13/1 = 13 1 ÷ 𝟏/𝟗 = 1 × 9/1 = 9 Thus, our sum is (1 ÷ 1/6) + (1 ÷ 1/10) + (1 ÷ 1/13) + (1 ÷ 1/9) + (1 ÷ 1/2) = 6 + 10 + 13 + 9 + 2 = 40 Therefore, required sum is 40 1 ÷ 𝟏/𝟐 = 1 × 2/1 = 2
