Why did the makers of our Constitution declare India to be a ‘Union of States’? Why were some sub-political units of India given a special status?

  1. Due to the presence of numerous princely states as well as British-ruled regions, India eventually became a Union of States . India has some subpolitical entities that have a special status.

  2. The status of Union territory was granted to areas under French and Portuguese administration.

  3. Jammu and Kashmir joined India under specific terms.

  4. Some units weren't big enough to stand alone as states. They were converted into Union Territories.

  5. States in the northeast have received unique treatment because they are home to numerous tribes that have their own history and culture.
