Example 7 Experiment: Toss a fair coin two times. Our tree diagram looks like Let’s read our tree diagram The Branches: Every time an event happens (a toss), the tree splits. The first toss splits into Heads (H) and Tails (T). The Second Step: From each of those first outcomes, you draw another split for the second toss. If you got Heads first, you can still get Heads or Tails second. If you got Tails first, you can still get Heads or Tails second. The Paths: To find an outcome, trace a line from the start to the end. Top path: H→H= Outcome HH. The Math: Notice the 1/2 written on the branches? To find the theoretical probability of a final outcome, you simply multiply the probabilities along that path. Probability of HH=1/2×1/2=1/4 (or 25% ).
