Ex 2.2, 6 A farmer cuts a 300 feet fence into two pieces of different sizes. The longer piece is four times as long as the shorter piece. How long are the two pieces? Let Length of smaller piece = x Given that longer piece is four times as long as the shorter piece So, we can write Length of longer piece = 4 × Length of smaller piece = 4x Since farmer cuts a 300 feet fence into two pieces of different sizes So, length of smaller and longer piece combined is 300 feet Thus Length of smaller piece + Length of longer piece = 300 x + 4x = 300 5x = 300 x = 300/5 x = 60 Thus, Length of smaller piece = x = 60 feet Length of bigger piece = 4x = 4 × 60 = 240 feet
