Ex 2.1, 1 (i) Find the degrees of the following polynomials: (i) 2x2 – 5x + 3 Here, the variable is x And its highest power of x is 2 So, the degree is 2 Ex 2.1, 1 (ii) Find the degrees of the following polynomials: (ii) y3 + 2y – 1 Here, the variable is y And its highest power of y is 3 So, the degree is 3 Ex 2.1, 1 (iii) Find the degrees of the following polynomials: (iii) – 9 Here, there is no variable So, we can write the constant as –9 = –9 × 1 = –9 × x0 So, the degree is 0 Ex 2.1, 1 (iv) Find the degrees of the following polynomials: (iv) 4z – 3 Here, the variable is z And its highest power of z is 1 (as 4z = 4z1) So, the degree is 1
