Ex 2.2, 3 The present age of Salil’s mother is three times Salil’s present age. After 5 years, their ages will add up to 70 years. Find their present ages. Let Present age of Salil = x Given that Present age of Salil’s mother is three times Salil’s present age. So, we can write Present age of Salil’s mother = 3 × Present Age of Salil = 3x After 5 years Age of Salil after 5 years = x + 5 Age of Salil’s mother after 5 years = 3x + 5 Given that after 5 years, their ages will add up to 70 years So, we can write Age of Salil after 5 year + Age of Salil’s mother after 5 years = 70 (x + 5) + (3x + 5) = 70 (x + 3x) + (5 + 5) = 70 4x + 10 = 70 4x = 70 – 10 4x = 60 x = 60/4 x = 15 Thus, Present age of Salil = x = 15 years Present age of Salil’s mother = 3x = 3 × 15 = 45 years
