Example 4 (Page 9) To prepare a particular millet kanji (porridge), suppose the ratio of millet to water to be mixed for boiling is 2:7. What percentage does the millet constitute in this mixture? If 500 ml of the mixture is to be made, how much millet should be used? Here, we have to note something important, A ratio compares part-to-part (Millet : Water). To get a percentage, we need part-to-whole (Millet : Total Mixture) Finding Ratio of Millet to mixture Given Ratio of Millet to Water = 2 : 7 Total parts =๐Ÿ+๐Ÿ•=๐Ÿ— parts. This means the mixture is ๐Ÿ/๐Ÿ— Millet and ๐Ÿ•/๐Ÿ— Water. Our question is What percentage does the millet constitute in this mixture? We need to convert the fraction 2/9 into a percentage Now, ๐Ÿ/๐Ÿ— in percentage = 2/9ร—100% =200/9% = 22.22โ€ฆ % And, last part of the question is If 500 ml of the mixture is to be made, how much millet should be used? We know millet is 2/9 of the total. So, we can write Amount of millet = 2/9 ร— Total mixture = ๐Ÿ/๐Ÿ— ร— ๐Ÿ“๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ฆ๐ฅ = 1000/9 ๐‘š๐‘™ = 111.11โ€ฆ ml Therefore, 500 ml mixture will have 111.11 ml of millet.
