Question 2 The government has taken 1/6 of Somu’s land to build a road. What part of the land remains with Somu now? She gives half of the remaining part of the land to her daughter Krishna and 1/3 of it to her son Bora. After giving them their shares, she keeps the remaining land for herself. (a) What part of the original land did Krishna get? Total land = 1 Amount government took = 1/6 Part of land remaning with Somu = 𝟏−𝟏/𝟔 = (6 − 1)/6 = 𝟓/𝟔 = 𝟓/𝟔 Thus, 𝟓/𝟔 of the land is remaining with Somu Given that She gives half of the remaining part of the land to her daughter Krishna So, Amount with Krishna = 1/2 × Reamaining = 1/2 ×5/6 = (1 × 5)/(2 × 6) = 𝟓/𝟏𝟐 = 𝟓/𝟔 Thus, 𝟓/𝟔 of the land is remaining with Somu Given that She gives half of the remaining part of the land to her daughter Krishna So, Amount with Krishna = 1/2 × Reamaining = 1/2 ×5/6 = (1 × 5)/(2 × 6) = 𝟓/𝟏𝟐 ∴ Krishna got ⁵/₁₂ of the original land. She gives half of the remaining part of the land to her daughter Krishna and 1/3 of it to her son Bora. After giving them their shares, she keeps the remaining land for herself. (b) What part of the original land did Bora get? Since Bora gets 1/3 of the remaining part So, Amount with Bora = 1/3 × Reamaining = 1/3 ×5/6 = (1 × 5)/(3 × 6) = 𝟓/𝟏𝟖 ∴ Bora got 𝟓/𝟏𝟖 of the original land. = 𝟓/𝟏𝟖 ∴ Bora got 𝟓/𝟏𝟖 of the original land. Question 2 The government has taken 1/6 of Somu’s land to build a road. What part of the land remains with Somu now? She gives half of the remaining part of the land to her daughter Krishna and 1/3 of it to her son Bora. After giving them their shares, she keeps the remaining land for herself. (c) What part of the original land did Somu keep for herself? Part of original land did Somu keep for herself = Remaining land – Part givne to Krishna – Part given to Bora = 𝟓/𝟔−𝟓/𝟏𝟐−𝟓/𝟏𝟖 = 5/6−(5/12+5/18) Taking out 5 common = 5/6−5 × (1/12+1/18) Since common denominator of 12 and 18 will be 36 = 5/6−5 × (1/12 ×3/3+1/18 ×2/2) = 5/6−5 × (3/36+2/36) = 5/6−5 × (5/36) Taking out 5 common = 5(1/6−5/36) Since common denominator of 6 and 36 will be 36 = 5(1/6 ×6/6−5/36) = 5(6/36−5/36) = 5((6 − 5)/36) = 5 × (1/36) = 𝟓/𝟑𝟔 Thus, Somu kept 𝟓/𝟑𝟔 of the original land for herself.
