  1. Railways were a precious resource that was crucial to preserving trade via the movement of product s as well as the colonial hegemony through the movement of troops.

  2. The sleepers for the railroad rails were required to be laid using wood. The sleepers kept their tracks from collapsing.

  3. Between 1760 and 2000 sleepers were required for every kilometer of railroad track. As a result, huge areas of forest were cleared to make place for railroads.
