  1. To meet the demand for tea, coffee, and rubber in Europe, vast expanses of natural forests were removed to make a place for plantations.

  2. The land was provided at a low cost to plantation owners, who were mainly of European descent.

  3.  They were enclosed, free of any vegetation, and served with tea or coffee.
