NCERT Class 9 Science Exploration

1. Exploration: Entering the World of Secondary Science

2. Cell: The Building Block of Life
Students learn why the cell is called the basic structural and functional unit of life. The chapter examines cell structure, cell organelles, plant and animal cells, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and the functions performed by different cell components.
3. Tissues in Action
This chapter explains how similar cells work together to form tissues. Students study plant tissues and animal tissues and connect their structures with the functions they perform.
4. Describing Motion Around Us
Students learn how motion can be described using distance, displacement, speed, velocity and acceleration. The chapter also introduces graphical representations of motion and the mathematical relationships between different quantities.
5. Exploring Mixtures and Their Separation
This chapter examines homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures, solutions, suspensions and colloids. Students learn how properties of components can be used to select suitable separation methods.
6. How Forces Affect Motion
Students explore how forces change the state of motion of objects. The chapter develops ideas related to balanced and unbalanced forces, inertia, momentum and the relationship between force, mass and acceleration.
7. Work, Energy and Simple Machines
This chapter introduces the scientific meaning of work and examines different forms of energy. Students also learn how simple machines make tasks easier by changing the magnitude or direction of an applied force.
8. Journey Inside the Atom
Students explore the internal structure of atoms. The chapter introduces electrons, protons and neutrons and explains how scientific models of the atom developed as new experimental evidence became available.
9. Atomic Foundations of Matter
This chapter connects atoms with molecules, ions and compounds. Students learn how chemical formulae represent substances and how atomic and molecular ideas help explain the composition of matter.
10. Sound Waves: Characteristics and Applications
Students learn how sound is produced and transmitted as a wave. The chapter examines amplitude, frequency, time period, wavelength, pitch, loudness and the reflection and practical applications of sound.
11. Reproduction: How Life Continues
This chapter explains reproduction as the biological process through which organisms continue their species. Students compare different modes of reproduction and study the basic processes involved.
12. Patterns in Life: Diversity and Classification
Students examine the enormous diversity of living organisms and learn why classification is necessary. Organisms are grouped using similarities, differences and evolutionary relationships.
13. Earth as a System: Energy, Matter and Life
This chapter presents Earth as an interconnected system. Students study how energy and matter move through the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and biosphere and how these systems support life.
Each Exploration chapter includes concept-based learning, questions given at the end of the chapter and The Journey Beyond sections that encourage students to extend their understanding beyond the basic textbook content.
