Words are of 2 types

  1. Vowels
  2. Consonants

 

Vowels
Vowels are words which start with a, e, i, o, u

Example

apple,elephant,intelligent.orange,umbrella

We use "an" with these

  • an apple
  • an elephant
  • an intelligent man
  • an umbrella
  • an orange

 

 

Consonants

All other words are called consonants

Example

boy,cat,dog,snake

(All these do not start with a,e,i,o,u

We normally use "a" with these

  1. a boy
  2. a cat
  3. a dog
  4. a snake

 

However for some words we use "an" like

Example

  1. an honest man
  2. an hour
  3. an honor
