“Plate movements are responsible for the distribution of earthquakes and volcanoes.” Explain.

Show Answer Hide Answer
  • Earthquakes and volcanoes lie in narrow belts , not scattered randomly.
  • These belts follow the plate boundaries exactly.
  • Where plates collide or slide, the crust breaks and shakes → earthquakes .
  • Where plates move apart or one sinks and melts, molten rock escapes → volcanoes .
  • So plate movement controls where they occur (e.g. the Ring of Fire follows Pacific plate boundaries).
