- Earthquakes and volcanoes lie in narrow belts , not scattered randomly.
- These belts follow the plate boundaries exactly.
- Where plates collide or slide, the crust breaks and shakes → earthquakes .
- Where plates move apart or one sinks and melts, molten rock escapes → volcanoes .
- So plate movement controls where they occur (e.g. the Ring of Fire follows Pacific plate boundaries).
