Example 6 The sum of two numbers is 64. One of the numbers is 10 more than the other. What are the two numbers? Let the smaller number be x Given that Sum of two numbers = 64 Smaller number + Bigger Number = 64 x + Bigger Number = 64 Bigger Number = 64 – x Also, given that One of the numbers is 10 more than the other Thus, Bigger Number = 10 + Smaller Number Putting values 64 – x = 10 + x 64 = 10 + x + x 64 = 10 + 2x 64 – 10 = 2x 54 = 2x 2x = 54 x = 54/2 x = 27 Thus, our numbers are Smaller number = x = 27 Bigger number = 64 – x = 64 – 27 = 37
