Example 5 A chess club charges a joining fee of ₹200 plus ₹50 for every match played. The following table shows the amount a player will have to pay as the number of matches varies. If a player paid ₹ 750, how many matches did he play? Number of matches played 1 2 3 4 5 m Amount paid (₹) 250 300 350 400 450 Let Number of matches played = m Thus, Amount a player pays = Joining fee + Number of matches played × Fee per match = 200 + m × 50 = 200 + 50m Now, our question is If a player paid ₹ 750, how many matches did he play We put Amount paid = ₹ 750 in our equation Now, Amount paid = 200 + 50m 750 = 200 + 50m 750 – 200 = 50m 550 = 50m 50m = 550 m = 550/50 m = 11 Thus, he played 11 matches Note: The amount paid by a player increases by ₹50 for every additional match played. This is also an example of a linear pattern
