What are Thermometers?
They are devices used to measure temperature .
- Clinical thermometers measure body temperature accurately.
Scene — 4.1 Types of Thermometers
- Room thermometers measure ambient air temperature .
Scene — 4.1 Types of Thermometers
- Maximum-minimum thermometers record daily temperature extremes .
Scene — 4.1 Types of Thermometers
- Normal human body temperature is 37°C .
Activity 7.5: Measuring Water Temperature at Different Stages (Page 7)
What you need:
- Thermometer
- Water from tap
- Beaker or container
- Heat source (stove or burner)
What to do:
- Step 1: Use a thermometre to measure the temperature of cold water from tap
- Step 2: Measure water temperature after standing in room
- Step 3: Measure warm water temperature
- Step 4: Measure temperature of water near boiling
- Step 5: Record your observations and note how the thermometre reading rises as heat is added
Observations
What you see:
| Water Stage | Temperature Reading | Observation |
|---|---|---|
| Cold tap water | 15-20°C | Lowest reading |
| Room temperature water | 25-30°C | Moderate reading |
| Warm water | 40-50°C | Higher reading |
| Near boiling water | 90-95°C | Highest reading |
Why this happens:
We have studied that thermometers are devices that measure temperature . This is why the reading rises as heat is added .
- More heat means higher temperature
- Thermometre responds to temperature changes
