Example 6 Anuja has a 3.9 m length of ribbon and she wants to cut it into 10 equal pieces. What is the length of each piece in decimal? What is the length of each piece if the ribbon is cut into 100 equal pieces? Let’s do both parts separately If cut into 10 pieces Given, Total length = 3.9 m Number of pieces = 10 Thus, Length of each piece = (𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ)/(𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑃𝑖𝑒𝑐𝑒𝑠) = (𝟑.𝟗)/𝟏𝟎 = 3.9 × 1/10 = 𝟑𝟗/𝟏𝟎 ×𝟏/𝟏𝟎 = 39/100 = 039/100 = 0.39 m Thus, length of each piece is 0.39 m If cut into 100 pieces Given, Total length = 3.9 m Number of pieces = 100 Thus, Length of each piece = (𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ)/(𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑃𝑖𝑒𝑐𝑒𝑠) = (𝟑.𝟗)/𝟏𝟎𝟎 = 3.9 × 1/100 = 𝟑𝟗/𝟏𝟎 ×𝟏/𝟏𝟎𝟎 = 39/1000 = 0039/1000 = 0.039 m Thus, length of each piece is 0.039 m
