Question 1 - Page 28 Find (+7) – (+18)We do follow these steps First make +7 using tokens We have to remove 18 positive tokens Now, we cannot remove 18 tokens from 7 So, we add a pair of positive and negative tokens We can do that because (+1) + (–1) = 0 So, we add 11 pairs of positive and negative tokens Now, remove 18 positive tokens Remaining tokens is our answer ∴ (+7) – (+18) = (–11) We could have also done it like (+7) – (+18) = (+7) + (–18) Question 1 - Page 28 Using tokens, argue out the following statements. (b) 4 – (– 12)We can do this like (+4) – (–12) = 4 + 12 Since both are positive numbers, we cannot cancel anything Counting the number of tokens Thus, (+4) – (–12) = 4 + 12 = +16
