Token Model for Adding and Subtracting IntegersNow, we use tokens to signify numbers Thus, we can write For positive numbers For Negative numbers Now, let’s add numbers using tokens Add (+ 5) and (– 3) (+ 5) + (– 3) We cancel + and – pairs, and the remaining number left is our answer Thus, (+ 5) + (– 3) = +2 Add (+ 5) and (–8) (+ 5) + (–8) We cancel + and – pairs, and the remaining number left is our answer Thus, (+ 5) + (– 8) = –3 This is different from Addition In addition, we make pairs In subtraction, we eliminate tokens Let’s do some examples Subtract (+5) – (+4) We do follow these steps First make +5 using tokens Then remove 4 tokens Remaining is our answer ∴ (+5) – (+4) = (+1) Subtraction using Tokens Subtract (–7) – (–5) We do follow these steps First make –7 using tokens Then remove 5 tokens Remaining is our answer ∴ (–7) – (–5) = (–2) Now, let’s do a different question Subtract (+5) – (+6) We do follow these steps First make 5 using tokens Now, we cannot remove 6 tokens from 5 So, we add a pair of positive and negative tokens We can do that because (+1) + (–1) = 0 Now, remove 6 positive tokens Remaining tokens is our answer ∴ (+5) – (+6) = (–1)
