Patterns in Integer MultiplicationLet’s see what happens if we multiply Positive Number × Negative Number First, we multiply positive numbers by 3 We observe that Every time the first number goes down by 1, the answer gets smaller by 3. If we go past 0: The pattern must continue. If we were at 0 and we go down by 3 again, we land on -3. So, we can write Negative × Positive = Negative Now, let’s try Multiplying two Negative Numbers Pattern for Negative × Negative Let’s multiply Positive Numbers by –3 We observe that Every time the first number goes down by 1, the answer gets bigger by 3. If we go past 0: The pattern must continue. If we were at 0 and we go up by 3 again, we land on 3. So, we can write Negative × Negative = Positive Thus, our rules are Negative × Positive = Negative Negative × Negative = Positive
